Enrichment Classes

 

The Suzuki Institute offers participants both Core (required) classes and Enrichment (elective) classes. For details about core classes, visit our Student Program Page

 

Half-day string and piano students select one Enrichment Class.
Full-day string books 1-3 select two Enrichment Classes.
String students book 4+ select one Enrichment Class
Piano students book 1 select three Enrichment Classes.
Piano Students book 2 + select two Enrichment Classes.
Flute students select two Enrichment Classes.

Parents or siblings of enrolled students may take Enrichment Classes for $35 per class, per person. Books listed are for all instruments unless otherwise noted.

 

  • Music & Movement: A wealth of fun musical experiences for your child: songs, chants, rhythm games and movement opportunities along with the use of props such as rhythm instruments, scarves, bells, balls, drums, etc., to help encourage your child to join in the fun without any pressure to perform. This class is based on the recognition that all children are musical. (half-day students and book 1)
  • Music Mind Games: Music Mind Games is a hands-on class where students play games to reinforce basic sight reading concepts. Using a variety of materials, we explore how to recognize and name notes, figure out different rhythms, and identify musical symbols. We run, jump, toss, tap, shout, whisper, and play! (half-day students and book 1)
  • Choir: An instrument everyone can play - the voice. Learn how to use your voice in this fun ensemble experience. (Strings: book 1-3, Piano: all books )
  • Folk Dance: Travel around the world as you learn the dances of other cultures. Enjoy using physical skills, rhythm and coordination. Be sure to bring flat, closed toe shoes for this class.(book 1-3)
  • Arts & Crafts: Let your creative genius come out! (book 1-3)
  • Fiddling: Put a little "country" in your life. (Strings - book 2 & 3)
  • Music Theater: Students will be doing a "Musical Revue" with singing and choreography! (book 4+)
  • Finale: Composition Music Theory. Learn about scales and chords to make melodies and harmonies. Learn how easy composing can be on the computer! Learn about form and secondary harmonies. Bring your composition to class and fine-tune your work of art. Go beyond traditional harmonies. Learn about form and explore deceptive cadences, augmented sixth chords, secondary dominants, etc. ( book 4+)
  • Advanced Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble: This workshop offers the opportunity for students to participate in ensemble and advanced chamber orchestra. (required for Strings book 4+)
  • Chess Class: Daniel Vellotti brings his fun chess-training "Success in Chess" classes to Idaho Suzuki Institute this summer! As an experienced and accomplished instructor & program director, he is committed to providing a student-friendly approach to the dazzling game and world of chess! BEGINNERS WELCOME! (book 1 and above)
  • Drumming a.k.a. Bucket Brigade: An exciting new way to "play with rhythm!" Started in a small school in Kansas, the Bucket Brigade has found a new home in Idaho. Using 5 gallon buckets, and special drum sticks, students of all ages will enjoy the experience of playing the buckets. The session will begin with basic rhythms and sticking and conclude with a completely choreographed composition. Performers will be a part of the creative process and "won't want to put their buckets away." Come join in the fun! (Book 2 and above)
