Piano Repertoire List

The Suzuki Institute experience relies upon a deep and thorough knowledge of all learned repertoire. Students are strongly encouraged to review all of the books they have studied and to be well prepared with any previously learned piece in the Suzuki repertoire. Clinicians will choose freely from pieces in the Suzuki sequence when working with both the technique and repertoire classes. Your institute experience will be much more satisfying if you review and polish in the months before institute.

Piano Repertoire Classes

(One of these classes will be assigned to each piano participant.)

  • PIANO DUO (2 pianos—4 hands) is taught by Barbara Meixner who has composed original 2nd piano accompaniments to most of the pieces in Suzuki Piano Volumes 1 through 4. Additional 2nd piano accompaniments are written by George Anson, Joseph McSpadden, August Riedel and Henry Timm among others. Students will get a chance to review and put a new feeling back into old, familiar pieces. This class is open to students studying Suzuki Piano Volumes 1 (r.h. alone o.k.) through 5.
  • PIANO DUET (1 piano—4 hands), coached by Barbara Meixner, is a class where students learn the basics of playing 1 piano—4 hands music using pieces outside the Suzuki repertoire. Participants will study two duets playing Primo on one duet and Secondo on the other. The student may either choose his/her own duet partner or be assigned a partner by the Institute Director. This class is intended for students studying Suzuki Piano Volumes 3 - 7 with some experience in note reading. Music will be sent to participants prior to the first day of Institute.
  • PIANO ENSEMBLE (2 pianos—4 hands and 1 piano—4 hands) is taught by Barbara Meixner. Each student will have a Piano Duo experience by playing the current Suzuki repertoire on Piano I while Ms. Meixner plays a 2nd piano accompaniment on Piano II. Students should review as many Suzuki pieces as possible. The class will also include lessons in Piano Duet (1 piano – 4 hands). The duet music will be given to the students when they come to the first class. Categories include: Jazz, Rags, Boogies and Blues; Program Music; Classical Music; Movie Themes. Students will play the Primo part; Ms. Meixner will play Secondo. The class is open to students studying Suzuki Piano Volumes 1 – 5.
  • INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE (DUO, TRIO, QUARTET, QUINTET). In this class, coached by Barbara Meixner and Jennifer Myers, elementary and intermediate piano students will learn the basics of playing in small groups with other instrumentalists. Piano students play a selected piece from the Suzuki Piano Repertoire Volumes 2 - 5. The added parts, composed by Joseph McSpadden, are for treble and bass instruments, or for two treble instruments. Added parts may include doubling. Requirements for participation: all students need to have the ability to play through a note mistake to keep up with the beat. In addition, pianists need to be able to begin, hands together, any place in the piece when given an aural cue. Pianists do not need to be able to read the notes of their pieces. The other instrumentalists do need to be able to read simple music and to play non-melody notes independently. Clarinet and trumpet students need to be able to play in the keys of G and D and, for more advanced groups, the keys of A Major, a minor, and b minor
